Athletics Day Tuesday

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Athletics afternoon, from 1.30 - 3.00pm.

Please make sure that your child has their named hat, a water bottle and good shoes for running and jumping in. Sunblock in the morning would e a good idea too.

You are welcome to come and watch. Hope to see you there!

THE ZOO!!

On Friday, Room 1 had a wonderful trip to the zoo. We started with an exciting bus trip. It was a bendy bus!

When we arrived at the zoo we went straight into the Education Centre. We went into the NZCCM (New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine) to see where the sick zoo animals visit the vet.
We can see the small operating table and the medium operating table. There were no sick animals today.
We also saw baby Leopard Tortoises.
They were cute. We also saw their Dad, Opa, in his outside enclosure.

We learnt about the tigers. Did you know that a tiger can carry 120kgs in its mouth? And their tongue can lick off skin! Ewwww!

We held a tiger's jawbone and smelled tiger food.

We also learned about animals we might find in our garden. We used spy tubes to hunt for animals.
We learned that animals don't like to be touched or picked up.

After our time in the Education centre, we explored the zoo with our adults. We watched the sealions for ages. We could see them above the water first. Then we went down the path and watched them underwater. They look like they are flying.

The orangutans had just been fed.

We had time on the playground before going back to the bus. Everyone loved the slides.

Tiritiri team (Year 1's) had a wonderful time at the zoo.

Room 1's Poems

In room 1, we choose a nursery rhyme each week to be our poem.   We read our poem everyday.
"Sometimes we sing it together," said Georgia.
"We learn how to read our poem," said Anna.
"We take turns to point to the words,' said Jayden G.

On Fridays we have our own copy of the poem.
"We find letters and words in our poem, and circle them with highlighter," said Si-En and Ella-Mae.
Natalia is looking for the letters m, d and a. She can recognize these letters.

Cameron and Eden are looking for letters too.

William is looking for the words and, in and with. He looks for the beginning sound to help him.

Nathan has found the word and. Ka pai Nathan.

"And then we colour it in." Said Shaneel.
Megan is colouring the picture. In room 1 we are learning to colour inside the lines. Megan is doing a great job of this.

This is Koji's first poem. In room 1 we are learning to make good colour choices. Koji has made great colour choices.

Todd has made great colour choices too, and is working hard to stay inside the lines. Colouring inside the lines helps us to develop finger muscle strength and control.

The poem goes home in our poem folder on Friday afternoon so we can share it with our family. We bring our folder back to school on Mondays.

Beginning writing

Some of room 1 has begun to write stories.
We start on a whiteboard.
We plan our writing with a picture.
Then we talk about what we will write. We use an alphabet card to find some small words.

Here is Anna's first writing. She can use fingers spaces and can find small words on the alphabet card.

Here is Anya's first writing. She can write some of the letters of the words she wants. She can plan her writing with a picture.

Friday Poems

Every Friday in room 1 we do our poem. We have been reading our poem all week.

We are learning to identify letters or words we know.
We are learning to point to each word when we read.
Georgia likes Little Bo Peep. "My favourite is the lamb."

Tayla likes colouring the picture.

Jacob likes using the highlighter to show the letters we know.

Ice Skating is Amazing

Today room 1 went ice-skating in the hall.

"When we went into the hall we had to put our gloves and boots on." Said Anna.

"The man and the teachers helped us to put our helmet, gloves and ice-skates on." Said Paige and Nathan.

"We went on the 'ice' but it was not real ice," said Owen.

"It was really hard to actually get started," said Kale. "The teachers helped us."

"Ice-skating is tricky," said Madison.

"Ice-skating is fun," said Si-En.

"Ice-skating is tricky,"   Said Alfie.

Room 1 thinks the ice-skating is AWESOME! Can we go again tomorrow?

Jumbo Stick Numbers

Some children in room one have been working with the Jumbo Stick Numbers this week. We are learning to identify and order numbers to 10.

We were given the coloured sticks all mixed up. We had to sort the numbers into the right order with our buddy.

Here are Megan and Holly with their sorted sticks. Great job girls!

Nathan and Si-En got their numbers in the right order too. You worked very well together. :-)

Next time we are learning to order numbers to 10 when some are missing.
